The Most Anticipated Movies of 2012
As 2011 comes to a close we look forward to everything the next year has to offer, be it good books, some returning television or most importantly the huge amount of upcoming movies. There are so many interesting titles generating buzz that it’s hard to pick one film as the most anticipated.
Therefore I have selected five possible candidates for the top spot. Five films that people have been waiting for and most importantly, talking about.
5. Prometheus – A Sci-Fi film from one of the greatest Sci-Fi directors (Ridley Scott) of all time. So little is known about the plot of Prometheus that it has everyone talking. What is known is that it will star Charlize Theron, Idris Elba and Michael Fassbender and their work on a ship called, wait for it, Prometheus. Wondering whether or not the film is an Alien spinoff or not has taken up more than a few forum pages and as Ridley Scott slowly releases more and more promotional images the speculation just increases. Prometheus is the perfect 2012 film for Sci-Fi fans and we haven’t even seen the trailer. The film is out on the 1st of June.
4. Twilight Breaking Dawn Part 2 – Let’s face it, Twilight isn’t going to disappear into the night without its last hurrah and whether or not you love it or hate it, Breaking Dawn part 2 is coming to cinemas to finish off the love story of Bella and Edward. Its popularity is really quite astonishing and considering that Breaking Dawn Part 1 brought in almost 300 million in its opening weekend, it’s a good chance that Part 2 will grab more on its way out the door. Part 2 will tell the story of Edward and Bella’s protection of their daughter against the Volturi and Bella discovering her newfound powers as a vampire. The marmite saga comes to a close November 16th.
3. The Hobbit – After all the director changes and production problems The Hobbit is finally filming with Peter Jackson at the helm. With fan favourites like Frodo (Elijah Wood), Gandalf (Ian McKellan) and Legolas (Orlando Bloom) joining the new Bilbo (Martin Freeman) it’s looking like it’s going to be on the same grand scale as Jackson’s previous Lord of the Rings trilogy. The story is definitely more relaxed than the Lord of the Rings but we’re sure that he’ll be able to make it just as enthralling for us mere mortals. The Hobbit comes to a Hobbit hole near you Decemeber 14th
2. The Dark Knight Rises - Christopher Nolan’s Batman series has been a rollercoaster ride of ups (Heath Ledger, Aaron Eckhart) and downs (The disappointing sub villains) and its drawing to a close with The Dark Knight Rises. The film opens 8 years after the events of The Dark Knight and the city is being ravaged by a terrorist called Bane. With Batman still being hunted it will be interesting how it will all unfold. With returning cast members Christian Bale, Morgan Freeman, Michael Caine and newcomers Tom Hardy, Marion Cotillard and Anne Hathaway the film is heading into one hell of a finale. To see if Nolan manages to make the first decent superhero trilogy watch it when it is released on July 20th
1. The Avengers – There is no doubt that the Avengers is hugely anticipate. Considering the fact its trailer was the most downloaded trailer of all time for its first few days of release or the fact that Marvel have been building towards it for four years and five films, it’s safe to say that there is at least a little buzz. Add Joss Whedon as a director and one fantastic cast (Robert Downey Jr, Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson and Samuel L Jackson etc) and you have a perfect recipe for both anticipation and hopefully success. With Loki (Tom Hiddleston) returning as the main antagonist the film is shaping up to be the best of the bunch and clearly people cannot wait. The Avengers come to cinemas April 27th
Overall these five films are the most anticipated movies of 2012 but if you’re like me you have your own specific film you’re looking forward to, be it on this list or not. Personally I’m waiting for the UK release of The Descendants by Alexander Payne, but whatever your choice one thing is certain, there is a lot to look forward to in 2012.
